Yes, most people need to use bug spray when visiting Roatan. Like many western Caribbean islands, we are subjected to mosquitoes, as well as sand flies - also known as sand fleas, biting midges or "no see-ums" (because you can't see them, but you will feel them). These are especially prevalent right when the sun begins to set and if you're anywhere near the shore line.
While there is no definitive research on the negative impact of DEET on marine life, we say why risk it? We recommend using an all-natural bug repellent. Our favorite local brands are Aegis and Nurse Andrea's. You can also make your own repellent by adding 2 ounces of tea tree oil and essential oils such as lavender to a 16 oz. bottle. Or just slather yourself in coconut oil and it acts as a barrier to biting insects. If you react severely to bug bites, we recommend bringing Benadryl itch relief gel.
